ASCO GU 2026: A NEW STANDARD IN KIDNEY CANCER

Belzutifan Significantly Reduces Recurrence Risk After Kidney Cancer Surgery

LITESPARK-022 Results: Adding belzutifan to pembrolizumab breaks new ground in disease-free survival (DFS).

A Biological Revolution in Kidney Cancer Management:
Immunotherapy (pembrolizumab) was already an important option for patients at high risk of recurrence after surgery for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). However, in the phase 3 **LITESPARK-022** trial, adding the HIF-2α inhibitor belzutifan to this treatment was proved to significantly prolong the time spent disease-free compared with immunotherapy alone. This combination is a candidate to become the strongest strategy for preventing recurrence after kidney cancer surgery.

Strong Evidence for Disease-Free Survival (DFS)

According to the data presented at ASCO GU 2026, the combination of pembrolizumab and belzutifan statistically significantly reduced the risk of disease recurrence or death compared with the group receiving pembrolizumab alone. When belzutifan’s blockade of the pathway (HIF-2α) that enables tumor cells to survive in an oxygen-deprived environment was combined with the power of immunotherapy, cellular resistance was overcome.

The study succeeded in maximizing the time patients spent “cancer-free” by minimizing the likelihood of tumor recurrence after surgery.

LITESPARK-022: Success Through Clinical Data

Reduction in Disease Recurrence Risk %20+

Combination therapy succeeded in lowering recurrence risk in high-risk RCC patients beyond that achieved with standard adjuvant treatment.

HIF-2α Inhibition

Belzutifan supports clearance after surgery by stopping the key mechanism that enables the tumor to obtain nourishment and grow.

Adjuvant Synergy

The combination of immunotherapy and targeted therapy offered such a clear DFS advantage in adjuvant RCC treatment for the first time.

Protecting the future after surgery

Our greatest fear after kidney cancer surgery is the disease returning silently. The LITESPARK-022 trial shows the importance of intervening in cancer’s survival mechanisms in advance rather than “waiting and seeing”. The synergy created by belzutifan and pembrolizumab proves that oncology has entered a more proactive phase.

These data will be among our strongest tools for managing recurrence risk in patients who have undergone kidney cancer surgery. Our goal is not merely to prolong life, but to build a recurrence-free period of life with good quality.
