Treatment With Caravans: An Innovative Hospital Accommodation Option for Patients and Staff

In this article
Accessing healthcare can be difficult, especially for patients travelling from distant areas. To make this easier, some US hospitals offer caravan or recreational vehicle (RV) parking. This approach makes treatment more comfortable for patients and helps hospitals provide care more effectively.
Caravans have long been popular for travel and accommodation, particularly in countries such as the United States. Their use has also grown in Türkiye in recent years. Although usually seen as alternative holiday accommodation, they may offer new opportunities in healthcare as well.
Hospital Visits by Caravan: A Different Place to Stay
Jim Weaver underwent two major operations over the past ten years: one to remove cancerous bladder tumours and another to clear a blocked artery. At 70, he knew he wanted privacy after surgery. But after travelling 150 miles from Bend, Oregon, to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland for an operation, he could not simply return home immediately.
The Weavers therefore brought their small but comfortable Escape 19 caravan and parked in one of the hospital’s 17 RV spaces. Leaving hospital with bandages, scars and everything else, Jim was clear that he did not want to stay in a hotel. “Being able to stay there in the caravan—wow, that really was a huge thing,” he said.
For Jim and his wife, this was more than an accommodation choice: it made recovery more personal and humane. Their caravan offered home comforts and privacy that a hotel room could not. While even the thought of being in a hotel with scars and bandages was uncomfortable, the caravan let him rest in his own space and bed.
The story shows that caravans may offer distinctive opportunities in healthcare as well as travel and holidays. Jim’s experience illustrates how hospitals providing these facilities can make treatment more comfortable and meaningful for patients.
Hospitals and Caravan Living: A Solution for Long-Distance Treatment
Some hospitals offer RV parking especially for patients from rural areas, allowing them to retain home comforts when travelling far for treatment. OHSU Hospital, for example, has provided these facilities free of charge since 2009.
Caravans: A Home Away From Home
Caravans let patients bring their own beds, bathrooms and kitchens, providing a more personal stay. Many patients drive 8-10 hours to OHSU Hospital, and a caravan may be more comfortable than finding a hotel.
RV Parking for Both Patients and Staff
RV parking can be useful not only for patients but also for hospital staff. At Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Colorado, the parking area is used by employees as well as patients.
Conclusion: An Innovative Approach for Patients
Hospital RV parking may make treatment more comfortable and affordable, particularly for patients travelling from distant areas. It can also help hospitals provide care more effectively.
Given Türkiye’s geography and differences in access to healthcare, caravans could offer patients distinctive comforts and access. Those travelling from remote areas to large cities for treatment may want a more comfortable and economical stay. Redesigning hospital parking to meet this need remains the most important practical issue.
In this context, US hospitals providing RV parking for patients, families and staff could offer an inspiring model for healthcare in Türkiye. The approach can help patients undergo treatment more comfortably while supporting hospitals in delivering care more effectively.
