HPV Oncogenesis in One Resource: The Special Issue Edited by Mustafa Özdoğan Becomes a Book

In this article
The cancer-causing potential of HPV and related viruses has received growing attention in both our laboratories and clinics over the past 20 years. We now clearly recognize HPV's direct role not only in cervical cancer but also in head and neck, anal, penile, and vaginal/vulvar cancers.
For this reason, assuming editorial responsibility for the special issue we published in Viruses was not only a scientific duty but also a global health responsibility. Working with my esteemed colleague Prof. Dr. G. Hossein Ashrafi and with scientific coordination support from Genetic Engineer Muharrem Okan Çakır , we have now brought this project into an even more meaningful form: the special issue has become a book.
📘 Papillomavirus-Induced Oncogenesis: Current Insights and Future Directions explores HPV's multidimensional impact from a holistic perspective, spanning molecular oncogenesis, diagnostic strategies, immune-evasion mechanisms, and public health vaccination programs.
📌 Key Topics Covered in the Book
🔬 Molecular Mechanisms:
The disruptive effects of HPV on the cell cycle, apoptosis, and the immune system through its E6 and E7 oncoproteins are examined in detail.
🧪 Diagnostics and Biomarkers:
The advantages of HPV DNA testing, mRNA analysis, p16/Ki-67 dual staining, and other molecular methods over conventional smear testing are highlighted.
🌍 Global Burden and Epidemiology:
Vaccination challenges, gaps in early diagnosis, and the associated rise in mortality in low- and middle-income countries are examined.
🛡️ Vaccination and Prevention Strategies:
The effectiveness of prophylactic HPV vaccines, vaccination strategies for males, and community-based awareness campaigns occupy an important place in the book.
🧬 New Treatment Approaches:
Virus-directed immunotherapies, CRISPR-based genomic correction, and targeted treatment combinations are analyzed in depth.
🌐 Why Does It Matter?
This book is more than a scientific review; it is also a guide that can help shape public health. We wanted to make this broad perspective on combating HPV-related cancers, spanning molecular biology to public health, accessible to scientists, clinicians, and policymakers.
Participating in this project was more than an academic responsibility for me; it was also a vision of health to pass on to future generations. As a scientist from Türkiye, I am proud to contribute on a global scale.
