Daratumumab

Daratumumab (Darzalex®), which received FDA approval on 16 November 2015, is used in patients previously given proteasome (protein-degrading molecule) inhibitors and immunomodulatory (immune system-regulating) drugs, with multiple myeloma. Daratumumab is the first monoclonal drug approved for multiple myeloma. The molecule called CD38 found on blood cells has many functions, such as signal generation and attachment to a tissue.
Daratumumab binds to CD38 and inhibits its functioning, enabling the tumor cell to be broken down and destroyed. Its most common side effects are bodily reactions during injection, fatigue, nausea, back pain, high fever and cough.
