Radiotherapy – Radiation Treatment with Elekta Versa HD

In this article
The new-generation radiation treatment device, one of the latest technologies in cancer treatment, Elekta Versa HD, prevents damage to healthy organs by calculating the doses delivered to the patient during treatment as accurately as possible. Among linear accelerators, the device’s structure allows 5 times less leakage dose transmission, protecting healthy organs while also minimizing the risk of secondary cancer formation. This technology also stands out by greatly shortening treatment time compared with other devices.
“High Dose Rate” mode shortens treatment time
Elekta Versa HD, which can apply all conventional radiotherapy techniques effectively and safely, also takes advances in modern cancer treatment a step further by performing linear accelerator-based stereotactic treatments. The device’s “High dose rate” mode provides a maximum dose rate three times greater than older-generation linear accelerators. Versa HD increases the success rate while shortening treatment time through its high dose rate delivery option.
Targeted irradiation with high reliability
The Versa HD device contains AgilityTM, Elekta’s revolutionary multileaf beam collimator. Agility’s leaf speed is more than twice that of other systems. This beam collimator’s patented leaf positioning technology verifies leaf movements in real time and provides irradiation with extreme precision, high reliability and improved conformity. The 160 field shapers (MLC) in the device define the shape of the target tumor better and reduce the risk of damage to healthy organs.
The most suitable dose rate for the patient is determined during planning
The Versa HD device uses Monaco, which performs the most precise dose calculation and is supported by the Monte Carlo algorithm, capable of the precise calculations accepted as the gold standard. Through this treatment planning system with biological dose optimization, the dose rate appropriate for the patient can be calculated, the effectiveness of the delivered dose can be checked, and organs are protected from risk.
Improved patient safety and comfort
Versa HD provides a comfortable and safe treatment environment with its new ergonomic features and softer, modern contours. Versa HD considerably improves patient comfort through low mechanical noise and ambient lighting effects.
Superior technological features
- It offers many treatment options in a single device through intensity-modulated radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy and stereotactic, that is, pinpoint treatment.
- Conebeam CT (Low-dose volumetric CT)
- Fully integrated with Elekta Agility® MLC; the 40 cm x 40 cm full field with 160 x 5 mm leaves defines the target tumor’s shape as sharply as possible.
- Treatments can be delivered faster through high leaf speed.
- It provides a significant reduction in nontherapeutic dose.
- Versa HD also improves patient comfort through its modern ergonomics, softer and brighter patient-friendly exterior, low mechanical noise, new user controls and ambient lighting effects installed to create a more reassuring and comfortable atmosphere for the patient.
- Versa HD is the newest generation of radiation treatment technology, changing standards in cancer treatment and breaking new ground in the treatment of some tumors.
Linear accelerator-based Radiosurgery (surgery with radiation) can be performed with this superior device, which also enables highly precise treatment of every patient with an indication for Radiotherapy.
Thanks to its collimator structure with 5 times less leakage dose transmission than its closest competitor, it protects healthy organs while having the lowest percentage risk of secondary cancer formation.
With 160 field shapers (MLC), the highest number in its field, it covers the shape of the target volume better and reduces the doses received by healthy organs.
Also through having the highest MLC (field shaper) speed in its field, it shortens treatment time compared with its competitors.
Through its treatment planning system with the Monte Carlo algorithm, which can perform globally accepted precise calculations, the doses delivered to the patient can be calculated as accurately as possible.
Through its energies (FFF) enabling filter-free treatment, it can reach dose rates up to 4 times those of filtered energies. It can deliver rapid and precise treatment to patients who will receive Radiosurgery (surgery with radiation).
4 dimensional treatmentis enabled by respiratory tracking, which maximally protects healthy organs while delivering dose to the target volume. The system irradiates only within the specified respiratory phase interval and automatically stops irradiation during other respiratory phases. Respiratory tracking, which is particularly important for patients with Liver, Lung and Left breast cancer, can also be performed. The system also automatically detects patient movements that may occur during treatment and has the ability to prevent healthy organs from receiving excessive doses.
6 dimensional table movement allows patient positioning to be carried out rapidly and precisely.
In the treatment of prostate cancer patients, prostate tracking can be performed under ultrasound imaging guidance without the need to place invasive markers (fiducial markers).
