Cancer Myths - 4: Do Stress and Sadness Cause Cancer? Is Cancer Sexually Transmitted, and How Does It Affect Sexuality?
In this article

Cancer’s causes and transmission are among the most frequently asked topics. Particularly in our society, almost everyone believes cancer is closely linked to distressing experiences… Sexual life, a basic need like eating and drinking, and how to approach it with cancer is also frequently wondered about but rarely discussed.

Does My Mood Determine Cancer Risk or Recovery?

No convincing scientific evidence shows stress, sadness or anxiety increases cancer risk. A positive mood can, however, help cope with cancer or treatment side effects. You may feel sad, angry, anxious, positive or cheerful. Positive behavior encourages sociability and activity. Physical activity and emotional support may help coping.

Is Cancer Sexually Transmitted? How Does It Affect Sexual Life?

Cancer is not sexually transmitted.

Diagnosis need not change everyone’s sex life or views; you may notice no change. Cancer can alter body image and reduce desire, but a difficult experience may also bring couples closer and strengthen relationships.

Mood changes and drug side effects may reduce desire during treatment. If patients feel well and nothing prevents it, avoiding sex is inappropriate. Maintaining confidence and closeness to a partner positively affects treatment.

Use Contraception During Cancer Treatment

Contraception helps prevent pregnancy during treatment. Pregnancy during cancer treatment risks a disabled child, miscarriage and consequently abortion. Suitable methods minimize sexual-life risks during treatment.

Discuss contraception with your doctor. Healthy pregnancy and childbirth are possible after treatment ends.
