Enzalutamide, a New Prostate Cancer Treatment, Is Now Available in Pharmacies in Our Country

Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer worldwide. Although its incidence is increasing with longer life expectancy, death rates from prostate cancer are very low. Advances in treatment deserve the greatest credit.
Prostate cancer develops through uncontrolled growth of cells in the prostate, one of the male reproductive glands. It initially spreads within the gland, then may cross its surrounding capsule into nearby tissues. Prostate cancer cells need hormonal growth signals called androgens. The main male androgen is testosterone. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) either stops testosterone production or blocks its effects in the body.
Metastatic prostate cancer may develop resistance to long-term ADT. Normally, androgen binding activates receptors that send growth and division signals to the cell’s control center. A new-generation androgen deprivation treatment, Enzalutamide (Xtandi Capsules) , blocks this signal. Studies demonstrated a survival benefit, and in 2012 it received FDA (American drug agency) approval for hormone-resistant prostate cancer previously treated with docetaxel chemotherapy.
Its side effects are easily tolerated. Major advantages are no need for cortisone, required with other treatments, and once-daily oral tablets. Xtandi is now also considered suitable in our country for hormone-resistant metastatic prostate cancer previously treated with docetaxel.
Access to another treatment option is a welcome development. Cancer care now involves individualized choices tailored to patients. Your doctor will identify the right option for you. Stay healthy…
