Saint Nicholas went to the ancient city of Myra, the Lycian capital in Demre district, where he became a bishop at a young age. As we enter a new year, we would like to briefly share the story, passed down through various sources, of Saint Nicholas, who fulfilled wishes and chose to share all his wealth with the poor.
The Story of Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas
He is known to have been born in the AD 270s as the son of a wealthy merchant. After his father died, Saint Nicholas decided to share his entire inheritance with the poor.
According to legend; one day in Patara, he wanted to secretly give financial help to 3 sisters of marriageable age who were too poor to prepare their dowries. While trying to secretly throw a purse of money through their window, Santa Claus saw that the windows were closed and threw the purse down the chimney. This is how the story of Santa Claus entering through the chimney and helping dreams come true began. According to legends, he became the protector particularly of children, the poor, travelers and the seas.

He is known to have died on December 6, 343, at the age of 65. The people of Demre / Myra built a church in his memory after his death and believed that his sarcophagus would remain there forever. In architecture and style, it is considered one of the most important monuments of the Byzantine period. The walls and ceiling of the church in Demre contain mosaics, icons and frescoes (wall paintings) of Saint Nicholas. In some images, he is depicted alongside holy figures. There are nearly 2000 churches dedicated to Santa Claus in various parts of the world.
With his benevolent and devout character, Santa Claus is recognized worldwide as a protective and generous saint. Thinking more about others’ happiness and needs than his own, Santa Claus can actually be considered a good example for current studies of human psychology. While positive thinking alone often does not make meaningful contributions to life, supporting positive thoughts with selflessness and generosity can improve both our own lives and the lives of others.
We hope your happiness and health grow alongside your loved ones in the new year…
