According to research at the University of Zurich, even a little generosity, rather than living only for oneself, is enough to make people happy. Nature Communications published the study’s findings, which indicate a direct relationship between generosity and happiness . These two experiences appear to be directly linked.

Even Small Acts of Kindness Can Make You Feel Happy

To measure happiness at the neural, or brain-cell, level, the researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) . Participants were first asked to make a set amount of donations for others, and the experimental group donated for 4 weeks. The control group was asked to spend the same amount on themselves. Everyone was then asked to act as generously as they genuinely wished in a related task while functional MRI measured brain activity. Participants showed different levels of generosity in this final task.

According to the Findings;

People who donated more generously and were willing to make sacrifices had higher happiness levels than others and also reported this verbally. Simply put, the researchers observed that generosity activates the brain’s happiness region. This activation was observed in the brain imaging findings.

Another striking observation was that neural change occurred as soon as the decision was made, before the action itself. However, the neural mechanisms through which generosity sustains happiness are still not fully understood.

In conclusion, people who live generously, openhandedly, or altruistically are much happier than those who think only of themselves and are reluctant to share.
