Potentially Carcinogenic Glyphosate Identified in a Common Weedkiller

In this article
California, one of the largest agricultural regions in the United States, placed glyphosate , a substance found in products used to eliminate weeds, on its carcinogen /cancer-causing list. Consequently, agricultural weed-killing products will carry “potential carcinogen” on their packaging.
What Is Glyphosate?
Glyphosate went on sale in 1974. It is used to eliminate weeds without harming other plants. It is colorless and odorless. The World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a potential carcinogen . Glyphosate-containing agricultural chemicals are sold in more than 160 countries and used in more than 250 cornfields.
Most weed-killing pesticides frequently used in our country contain glyphosate (the best-known trade name is Roundup). It is important to emphasize that these weedkillers are also used on sports fields, in parks and in gardens.
How Should I Protect Myself Against Carcinogens in Agricultural Chemicals?
- Avoid using weedkillers unless necessary. Read packaging warnings carefully. Do not buy products containing “Glyphosate.”
- People applying these chemicals must wear protective masks and clothing.
- Agricultural chemicals should not be used in animal habitats. Packaging and waste should not be left in nature.
- Fruit and vegetables in treated areas should not be consumed for a certain period and should be washed thoroughly if consumed.
