The Rise of Alcohol-Free Social Drinks: New Options, New Habits

Why Are Alcohol-Free Drinks Becoming Popular?
The presence of alcohol has long been accepted as the norm in traditional social settings. However, growing health consciousness, the different lifestyles of younger generations, and increasing awareness of the harms of alcohol have rapidly increased the popularity of alcohol-free drinks. Today, in New York's Alphabet Village neighborhood, places such as Hekate’s Hearth illustrate the growing number of entirely alcohol-free bars offering a wide variety of drinks.
“People may not know they need a place like this,” says Hekate’s Hearth tarot reader Katherine Maley. The venue serves as a café during the day, while in the evening people enjoy alcohol-free cocktails and a different kind of social experience. Maley says that savoring alcohol-free drinks is much more enjoyable than consuming drinks without thinking.
The Dynamics of the Alcohol-Free Drinks Industry
In recent years, the alcohol-free drinks industry has offered consumers innovative and appealing options. Susie Goldspink of IWSR research consultancy says, “Most bars now offer more than one alcohol-free option. Awareness of alcohol's harms has grown, and the generation under 28, known as Generation Z, is particularly health-focused.” These generations are observed to have less stigma around alcohol consumption.
According to Goldspink, alcohol-free beer is the market's most developed segment. Cocktails and alcohol-free wines follow. However, there is still room for improvement in alcohol-free wines and irradiated spirits.
A New Generation of Alcohol-Free Beers and Cocktails
The alcohol-free beer market has moved beyond the traditional brands on supermarket shelves. One pioneer of this new era, founded in 2017 in Stratford, Connecticut, is Athletic Brewing . The company has achieved widespread success worldwide by offering craft beers with an alcohol content below 0.5%.
Artisanal beer is generally produced by small, independent brewers and has high quality and distinctive recipes. In English it is called craft beer .
While preparing for an ultramarathon, Athletic Brewing co-founder Bill Shufelt eliminated all the effects of alcohol from his life for a month. “He began sleeping better and noticed dramatic improvements in his health,” says Athletic's Communications Director Chris Furnari. The experience led Shufelt to pioneer alcohol-free beers. Today, Athletic Brewing offers a broad portfolio ranging from light beers and IPAs to Palomas inspired by non-alcoholic cocktails.
80% of Athletic Brewing customers still drink alcohol occasionally, but consume less of it thanks to these new options.
Alcohol-Free Wine May Be a Healthy Alternative
In 2023, Food and Bioprocess Technology published a scientific paper showing that consuming alcohol-free red wine significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure and increased plasma nitric oxide levels. These effects are attributed to the vasodilatory properties of polyphenols in red wine.
Another study conducted in 2012 also confirmed that alcohol-free red wine reduced blood pressure and increased plasma nitric oxide levels in men at high cardiovascular risk.
Techniques for reducing alcohol during winemaking are summarized below:

Alcohol-Free Alternatives for Cocktail Enthusiasts
For many years, cocktail enthusiasts struggled to find appealing alcohol-free alternatives beyond fruit-juice sprays. However, Curious Elixirs and other innovative companies are filling this gap with alcohol-free versions of classic cocktail recipes and botanical blends. Curious Elixirs founder John Wiseman decided to seek a new path after experiencing the effects of heavy drinking in his life. His company offers classics such as alcohol-free Negronis, Old Fashioneds, and blood-orange spritzes, alongside innovative adaptogen- and botanical-based drinks.
Although adaptogens are described as plant-derived ingredients used to reduce stress, scientific evidence remains insufficient. Wiseman calls for more research to better understand their effects.
Can Alcohol-Free Cocktails Increase the Risk of Addiction?
For people with alcohol or substance addiction, the appearance and taste of alcohol-free cocktails may be triggering. Dr. Stephanie Steinman, a clinical psychologist at UW Health, warns, “Some non-alcoholic cocktails may contain small amounts of alcohol and, because they resemble alcoholic drinks, may increase the risk of relapse,” she says.
John Wiseman acknowledges that these concerns are valid, but emphasizes that Curious Elixirs products offer a new and different experience. “Our products aim to create something entirely new rather than imitate existing alcoholic drinks,” he says.
Katherine Maley says that working in alcohol-free bars could be triggering at first, but that therapy and personal growth helped her overcome this.

A New Approach to Socializing
Today, alcohol-free drinks offer varied and appealing options both for people who have stopped drinking and for those who drink occasionally. As John Wiseman puts it, “Our aim is not to view alcohol as the enemy, but to offer everyone better options.”
This new trend creates a more mindful and enjoyable social space for people seeking to adopt healthier lifestyles.
