A More Effective, Body-Clock-Aligned Diet for Diabetes

In this article
Doctors and dietitians commonly recommend type-2 diabetes patients eat 3 main meals and 3 snacks , totaling 6 eating occasions. But does this create a cycle requiring more intensive treatment?
Could Another Dietary Approach Be Better?
Over 400 million people live with diabetes worldwide. Doctors usually prescribe glucose-control medicines, and many professionals believe small frequent meals best.
This plan, however, may lead to more intensive treatment, with insulin resistance requiring high doses. Glucose fluctuations and high-dose insulin may cause weight gain and increased cardiovascular disease risk.
Tel Aviv University researchers found eating according to the natural “body clock,” usually three daily meals, better synchronizes physiology and may reduce insulin needs.
They say traditional 6-small-meal diets alone fail to balance glucose, requiring medicines, and insulin injections increase glucose and weight.
The team studied eating in line with circadian rhythm , confirming that daily 3 meals may better benefit type 2 diabetes.
Researchers recommend moving starch -rich high-calorie foods, healthy calorie sources, earlier in the day. This improves glycemic control and glucose balance in type 2 diabetes.
The study selected type 2 diabetes in 28 people: half followed conventional 6 meals, half circadian-aligned 3 main meals.
The daily 3-meal group ate more in the morning, less toward evening, and nothing at night , aligned with natural tendencies: fruit, bread, and starch early, a good lunch, and small dinner without starch, sweets, or fruit.
Weight, glucose control, appetite, and circadian gene expression were assessed initially and at 2 weeks and 12 weeks.
Those eating six meals neither lost weight nor improved glucose control. Three-meal participants did both, with substantially reduced insulin and medicine requirements; some stopped insulin entirely.
The 3-meal diet also improved clock-gene expression, suggesting prevention not only of diabetes complications but cardiovascular disease, aging, and cancer regulated by these genes.
The Study's Weakness is testing only 28 people, though circadian alignment strengthens it. It may guide further 3-meal studies. Science evolves, and research improves knowledge. Always obtain professional support when trying these diets.
