Are Dried Fruits Healthy?

From dried apricots to blueberries, dates to raisins, dried fruits are healthy! Fruit dried for long-term storage, with its water evaporating in the process, contains important nutritional resources. A study involving more than 13.000 people found that those who ate dried fruit had better diets and were slimmer than those who did not.

For comparison, half a small bowl of apricots contains 4.7 grams of fiber, while the same amount of fresh apricots contains 1.6 grams. Dried fruits are rich in many important vitamins and minerals. However, remember that sugar is more concentrated in dried fruits. Although this is generally not a cause for concern, they are more suitable for athletes who need more energy or people doing physically demanding jobs, or may be used to replace a meal. However, sugar, carbohydrate and calorie intake need careful monitoring. For example, a cup of grapes contains 23 grams of sugar and 104 calories. A cup of raisins, however, contains approximately five times as much: 116 grams of sugar and 520 calories.

According to United States dietary guidelines, daily fruit consumption of 1,5 to 2 servings is recommended, and half a serving of dried fruit counts as one serving.

For people with diabetes or obesity , these amounts may differ. If you have a health problem, you should determine the amount in consultation with your doctor.

In general, dried fruits are a nutritious, healthy snack; if you are considering losing weight through calorie restriction, dried fruits may be chosen in place of lunch on certain days of the week. Mixed with nuts such as hazelnuts and peanuts, they are also an easy alternative to carry in your bag at any time. However, caution is needed if you have concerns about sugars, carbohydrates and calories. We also recommend avoiding dried fruits with added sugars, such as dried pineapple slices coated with sugar. Finally, if you are sensitive to sulfites or have asthma, choose natural dried fruits without sulfur dioxide or preservatives.
